Teamwork is a skill used in everyday life. Children need to learn this quality at a young age, so that it becomes a habit and a personal strength.
Teamwork is vital within sports and so is one of the key areas we at Active Superstars focus on.
So why is it important?
- Teamwork helps to build confidence
- It helps children to make new friends
- Older children can help others with their weaknesses, and learn on what they should improve on
- Encourages exchanging of ideas
- Helps children to learn to be a team player. It isn’t all about winning
- Teamwork helps children to become kinder. They will learn how to know what other team members need
- Teaches negotiation with others
- It teaches values and how to help others
- Helps to develop stronger communication skills
How do we encourage teamwork?
At home and school teamwork can be easily encouraged. We can do this by setting up cooperative tasks for the children, a simple task like cleaning the playroom or garden together. Make sure each child has a specific job and feels valued in the team. Encourage praise from other team members by getting the group of children to go around and say what each team member did well within their job. Decision making in a group also makes a big impact, whether this be a family decision or a class one, get the children to discuss some ideas and decide which they should all compromise on. Lastly, rewarding good team work will encourage children to keep doing it, and teach them that team work is a vital skill to have and they should use it wherever possible.
Within our sessions the coaches aim to get the children involved and give them an opportunity to develop new skills. They do this by getting the children to work together and be part of a team.
