Problem solving is an important lesson for all children to learn, as it can help them in all aspects of their life and through to their future. Problem solving skills can be learnt easily and with the help of parents and teachers.
Ways to Learn Problem Solving:
- As a parent, give your child some money and ask them how much change you would get if you bought something for a certain amount. This will get them thinking and will also help with their maths skills
- Teach your child to stay calm under pressure
- Help your child to make lists and prioritise. This will help them in the future when they could have multiple tasks to complete at one time
- Ensure that before asking for help they try to solve things by themselves, however reassure them that they are not alone and to ask for help when it is needed
- Create a pretend situation with a problem that the child needs to overcome. For example, in a game of football ask them what they could do if a certain player has the ball
- Go to the local park or somewhere the children are familiar with and as them which route they should take to get to a certain location
- Teach children to focus on the solution, and not the problem
- Teach them to reflect on their good decisions and be proud of themselves when their problem solving is successful
