Sometimes it can be hard to keep the joy in sports for children. There is an ever increasing amount of children that quit sport as they grow older or lose interest after a period of time.
This means that for both parents and school teachers it can be hard to understand why the children want to quit, and more importantly how to prevent from them from doing this, and instead enjoying the sport activities that they play.
How to Keep the Joy in Sports Activities?
Don’t overdo it
Sometimes encouragement can go too far and children feel pushed into doing their sport, and find the pressure too much. This pressure can mean that children don’t find the sport fun anymore. Children at a young age are advised to play no more than three sports, as this can overdo it and create too much pressure.
Give them a say
Ask your child/children what sport they are interested in and would like to learn further. Too often children get pushed into certain sports that they have no interest in. Instead, see what they are passionate about and give it a go!
Cut Comparisons
Don’t compare children or players to one another. This will create added pressure and will suck the fun right out of the sport. Instead, teach children that they are all equal, and winning isn’t always the main aim. Remind your child to focus on their own performance instead of comparing themselves to others, and praise personal growth and improvement. Reassure them that everyone makes mistakes, and you are proud of them. Encourage, never criticise.
Social Elements
A big reason that children like to play sports is because of the social factors. Making new friends and having fun is a great positive factor to getting children interested in sports.
Creating an Environment
Creating a positive, kind environment will inspire children and motivate them to enjoy their sport and respect those around them. It will teach them that they can have fun. Treat each team member or child with fairness, whilst being caring. If you are passionate about the sport, it is likely that this will pass on to the child.
