With technology on the rise, children are choosing to stay inside and play on computer games and watching TV rather than engaging in active, healthy play.
This also means that they are progressively deciding to hide away in their rooms rather than spending time with their family.
Children are heavily influenced by their parents, so as a parent it is important to set a good example. Engaging in active fitness as a family can not only help to increase a child’s wellbeing, but will also increase mental wellbeing and social relationships. Taking part in fitness activities as a family encourages a child to participate and enjoy being healthy.
How do I start Family fitness?
First of all, decide what level of participation your family is ready for, whether it be getting ready for a family Olympics or just starting small. The best way to go about family fitness is to find little moments and sneak activity in, and by doing this quickly and efficiently it will ensure that motivation is not lost.
What activities can we do as a family?
- Post Dinner Walks. After having dinner, make time for a walk. This could be as little as half an hour, just to walk off some of that –fullness- and getting some fresh air too. Don’t forget-fresh air also helps to aid sleep!
- Weekly Sports night. Making time each week for an evening of fun activities will give something that children can look forward to. Decide on favourite games and mix it up each week. Find indoor activity ideas here.
- Walk the dog. The easiest activity of all. It could even be on the way home from school, or just before dinner. Walking the dog will help children to get their heart pumping, become street wise, and get some fresh air.
- Canal Walks. For those of you that live in the local Birmingham area why not go for a walk along the canal
- Fitness Video games. Does your child have a favourite video game or tv programme? Make up a fitness activity including some of their favourite characters or by role playing the scenes.
- Set Challenges. To motivate children to want to do activities set healthy competition or challenges. Playing team games such as relays will help to keep competition healthy.
