On Friday 8th July 2016 the charity committee at Our Lady and St Rose of Lima primary school, planned and prepared a whole-school event to raise money for Birmingham’s Children Hospital which included music, T-shirts and many creative, fun, energising games for the children.
Active Superstars were invited to assist with running the games and events with the School. Birmingham’s Children’s Hospital Charity are a fundraising hospital aiming to raise money in order to enhance patients experiences.
The Blindfolded Events
As part of the fun and exhilarating event the children played a number of exciting games such as; blindfolded football, skipping contests, races around the school, blindfolded obstacle courses and many more whilst celebrating this amazing charity. These events were the perfect way to raise awareness of blindness in a fun, engaging and out of the ordinary way.
Blindfolded Football
Blindfolded football was an event that all the children were excited for and it took place in the caged football pitch of the school. Active Superstars coaches, teachers and parents would guide the blindfolded children to the centre of the pitch and place a ball in front of them. The children would then rely on their other senses to shoot for the goal and would not give up until they had scored.
Blindfolded Obstacle Course
The blindfolded obstacle course was very unique and allowed the children the opportunity to work on their team building skills - listening and directing one another until they reached the end. The results were outstanding as all children worked very hard to support and guide their fellow peers in need, all children made it to the end and wanted to repeat the activity all day.
Skipping
Skipping was an event all children could participate in (as the blindfolded games were not suitable for the younger years). The children would use a tracking skipping rope to count how many times they had jumped, they then had one minute to skip as fast as they could to see how many skips they could fit in within that time. The younger years would skip as a team, while older students would hold either end of the skipping ropes for them to jump over. This event was so successful that by the end, parents and teachers too had their own competition!
The Mini Marathon
The Mini Marathon was another event in which all children could participate. Active Superstars coaches ran with the children to do a long lap of the school. This gave children the opportunity to walk, run, race, skip or dance around the school, in true marathon style. Towards the end of the course, children would support the runners, cheering them on and putting their hands out for high fives as a positive sign of encouragement. All children finished the run happy and proud of their achievements.
The Cake Break
Once the children had completed a number of events by year group, they were able to take five minutes to drink out of their Active Superstars water bottles and indulge in a sweet treat. This gave the children the chance to relax, take a break and be ready to take on more activities!
The Raffle
Prior to the event, Our Lady and St Rose of Lima had carried out a large amount of fundraising, the raffle being one of them. The results however, were presented on the day of the big event, when children, teachers and parents who purchased raffle tickets claimed their prizes.
The prizes ranged from cinema tickets to family days out, toys, meal vouchers and many more. This was a great initiative as many tickets were purchased and many prizes were given.
The Grand Total and Releasing Balloons
As the school had participated in a number of activities to raise money for Birmingham’s Children’s hospital, they raised more this year than they ever had before!
In support of Birmingham Children's Hospital, Our Lady of St Rose of Lima raised a grand total of...
This is a huge amount of money and parents, teachers and the students were very proud of how much they have raised. To celebrate this achievement balloons were released in honour of the Children’s Hospital, a heartwarming atmosphere surrounded the release of the balloons... A great way to end this unique day!
Steps2sport would like thank Our Lady and St Rose of Lima for allowing us to be part of this special day.
